I Came Upon a Lighthouse
By SHANTANU NAIDU
I Came Upon a Lighthouse: Short stories of Life with Ratan Tata is an honest, light-hearted telling of this uncommon bond between a millennial and an octogenarian that gives glimpses of a beloved Indian icon in a warm light.
Tumblr media
I Came Upon a Lighthouse book by Shantanu Naidu is an endearing portrait of an Indian legend.
I told him that when I write a book, I would write about another side of him and not just historic events or business milestones. I would write about us and our adventures together, and how I saw him, colours and shades of him unknown to the world. Life beyond the great steel wall of ‘industry doyen’.
He agreed. ‘There cannot be one book that captures everything … So you do your thing, give your perspective.’
It was their shared empathy for homeless dogs that sparked an unlikely friendship. In 2014, Shantanu Naidu, an automobile design engineer in his early twenties, developed an innovation to save the local strays from being run over by speeding cars. Ratan Tata, himself known for his compassion for stray dogs, took note. Impressed, he not only decided to invest in the venture, but over the years became a mentor, boss and an unexpectedly dear friend to Shantanu.

sonic 3 spoilers
i preordered the sonic 3 novelization (bc im autistic and insane) and i just read it and something stood out to me....
"Treason's greetings, my streaming sycophants. I have returned to deduce, debate, and dissect the latest episode of La Última Pasíon!" he intoned into his phone to what Stone had assured him were an army of social media followers.
the streaming comes up a few more times in the book too. not only is robotnik a streamer but stone is the one who gave it to him 😭
the final livestream comes from a series of livestreams throughout the entire book but this also means that stone was the one who gave him the stream that robotnik later used to send him his final message and im ill omfg

An old(er) novel written by one of my favorite non-English authors.
While first person narrators may not always be my or other people's first choice (pun intended), this author has such a funny, witty and clever style that makes it incredibly immersive and entertaining to be in her main character's head. Just in general I like slipping into the shoes of female leads with different lives, different experiences and different situations because when the authors behind it know what they're talking about it feels like I'm also learning something☺️
For the first time in a very long time, I'm sitting down with an actual physical book in hand to read. I notice that I'm slower and more easily distracted than I used to be, but that can be worked on.
It feels amazing. I never knew I missed this

A recommendation:
A little while ago, I mentioned that one of my authors is self-publishing her book (very soon!). To me, it’s got a real Mass Effect-y vibe, even though Amy hasn’t played Mass Effect. She comps it to Star Wars meets Bladerunner (which is also a bit Mass Effect-y). It’s character-driven, exciting, a bit sexy, a bit sad. She’s done some cool worldbuilding with cool lore, and it’s definitely the first of a series, if I have any say in the matter.
I edit a lot of things, but very few are books as squarely in my wheelhouse as A Symphony of Starlight, by Amy Zed. (You’re in this club too @jemmaprophet.) The book isn’t out yet, but in her latest newsletter, Amy said she’s planning on doing a $0.99 preorder sale soon. Here’s her website, where you can sign up for said newsletter.
This is her first book (like, ever???) and she has worked so hard on it. I’m so proud of her. I just really want her to see an influx of love, you know? Plus, she is a delightful human being filled to the brim with enthusiasm and joy.
I mean, I enjoyed this book so much that half my comments on the last draft were just little blurbs of fanfic I wrote in the margins. ❤️

Hello and happy national poetry month!
In very exciting news, you can now officially preorder my latest poetry book, Itinerant Songs, through Recenter Press. I’ve been working on this collection since 2018, and I’m beyond thrilled to finally bring these poems to you.
PRE-ORDER: ITINERANT SONGS
For those of us that work and are weighed down, Itinerant Songs is a yearning for home—for safe, affordable shelter, clean, commonly-held water, and the rights to our own land and being amongst our people. Through low-wage jobs, the “hard-facts of devotion,” and pilgrimage and recovery, these poems are a politically urgent testament to our times as much as they are a lasting, spiritual attestation.
Many periods of my life have weaved their way into the poems in this book: years of housing insecurity and inconsistency, working multiple jobs in multiple industries, political organizing, walking 500+ miles along the Portuguese Camino de Santiago, social media addiction and trauma recovery, grappling with illness and loss, developing my relationship with God, with ancestors, and with myself — all forming a cohesive whole that makes up Itinerant Songs.

B.N. Goswamy (1933–2023), one of the most eminent art historians of our times, put India’s art on the global map. His lucid interpretation of art made the subject accessible to a wider audience. He was a master chronicler who offered ‘slight sketches of large subjects’.
Ruminations, Goswamy’s last work of, rues the vanishing traces of artisans’ guilds in Europe, celebrates the illustrations to La Fontaine’s fables produced in Lahore, opens a window to the Jain legend of Ilaputra who was driven to the edge of renunciation, explores the pioneering map of the world drawn by the Turkish admiral, Piri Reis, admires the dazzling range of embroideries in the Calico Museum, chronicles the ensigns of royalty that belong to the Mughal period, brings to light Timurid kitab-khanas, the Tibetan sand-mandalas and much more.
Lucid, comprehensive and engaging, Ruminations is the most definitive primer on art in India and South Asia.

My latest book is available for preorder!
I know a lot of us are trying to buy less on the devil's A, but for now that's where it's available, so please do support me if you can.
Diffidence and the Rift
Diffidence Obedience Atonement Smythe is a grad student who prefers to never use his full name. Ever. He's finishing a Ph.D. in Extemporaneous Magic, and his research project for his dissertation is closing the Rift between worlds that he accidentally opened when he was thirteen. Obviously, caffeine is an important part of his life. Ergi Thusol-Von Klempt is a half-orc who works in the infamous Goblin Market, selling magical pastries to those who need them – or, in Diff's case, just want them. He's got bubblegum-pink hair, lovely lilac skin, and a smile like sunshine, at least if you ask Diff. Ergi is intrigued by his frazzled, but handsome, frequent customer. The Goblin Market is a magical space that anyone can find if they truly need it, and most people visit once or twice if at all. Diff is there several times a week as he untangles the layered mysteries of the Rift, and has had years to develop his crush on Ergi. In this cozy urban fantasy, Diff and Ergi find some solutions to life's problems in the Market, along with the courage to talk to each other. Diff might even find a future beyond the Rift that has consumed over a decade of his life. Tags: m/m romance, half-orc/human, crushes to lovers, open-door spice, found family, unusual magic, fiber arts, lots of tea, this book will make you hungry

(I had a lot of fun with the set up, heheh.)
As for production on other preorder items that will be longer:
Pudding charms are arriving to me today! Hoping to have them all assembled to ship out those preorders before Saturday and put the extras in shop for those interested!
Ekiben sets! - Just started production and will take about 1-2 months, and then a couple weeks to ship to me.
Soda Cans! - Production is finished, BUT still waiting to hear back if they can be shipped before the end of the year. There's a risk of the liquid charms cracking and leaking if the temperature is too low, so at latest they may not ship until late January/February!
That should be all on updates! All of these guys are up on shop right now (aside from the submas designs for the mini standees, might have to do a small restock next year if there's interest...), and preorders end 11/16 around midnight! You can get goodies below!
Also while I'm here, I'll mention I'm planning to send out another interest check for feedback on shop stuff in the near future!
Very many thanks for your support!

Whimsical. Dark. Reader-obsessed.
We’re a small, independent publishing house conjured into existence in 2017 by writers who wanted something different—something better—for authors and readers alike.
We specialize in: Fantasy that cuts deep Horror that lingers in your bones Sci-fi that stares back when you blink at the stars
And yes—we actually market for our authors. Because we’re author-owned. Because we believe in paying it forward. Because writers should be seen and sold.
We release about 5 spellbinding titles per year, carefully chosen and beautifully crafted, with a focus on original voices, queer stories, and genre blends that don’t color inside the lines.
Our books live in indie bookstores, haunt the halls of Amazon, rest quietly on Barnes & Noble Online, and sometimes whisper through the pages of your favorite newsletter.
Want to know more? Check out our latest titles, preorder something strange and wonderful, or follow us here for behind-the-scenes, cover reveals, author spotlights, and bookish chaos.

Life is wild sometimes. I made a small decision almost a year ago, based on a recommendation of one of the most positive individuals to ever grace my life so far, and I firmly believe that it has changed the course of my life. The decision was to sign up for a class about fantasy writing and publishing that my university was offering, which is the exact genre I so desperately want to have a career in (I want to be a writer you see). That fall I took the 8 week class and it happened to be taught by none other than the absolutely wonderful, utterly amazing fantasy author Alex Rowland (aka @ariaste). If you asked myself or any of my peers, we will happily tell you that this class was one of the comfiest, kindest, most encouraging academic experiences we have ever had and that it has changed our lives. Anyone who has taken at least one creative writing class in their life will tell you of the horrors that ruthlessly plague them and all sorts of traumatic incidents endured. This class was a soothing balm to a disheartened soul with trampled ambitions. You might be wondering where I'm going with this? Well, when you take a class with an author, they tend to gush rather happily about their work. It did not take long for me to know in my heart of hearts that I NEEDED to get my hands on Alex's latest book, A Taste of Gold and Iron (aka ATOGAI). And when I finally got the perfect chance to read it a little over a month ago, when I tell you, it was chapter five when I became undeniably aware that this book had snatched my heart and I would gladly let it have it for the rest of my life. If I hadn't already bought all of Alex's books on a strong hunch that I would absolutely, completely and utterly fall in love with ATOGAI, I would have definitely right after I finished that chapter. This is inarguably one of the best books I have ever read, checking all my boxes (including ones I didn't even know I had). I don't think it's possible to praise it enough because it deserves it all. The wait I endured before I could read it was so worth it and I will be forever grateful for the sheer chance that it and it's author entered into my life. It shattered my high expectations and I will never be the same and couldn't be happier about it. Now, I still have to read the other books that Alex has written (and I will savor them like a piece of the finest of desserts and I haven't the slightest doubt, despite that I tend to be more on the quiet side, I will be absolutely mouthing off about them to anyone who will listen), but I want to specifically highlight their upcoming book, Running Close to the Wind (aka RCW). Because I was in their class and a part of their Discord, I have been treated to several chapters of the book and I can very firmly tell you that you need this in your life. It's terribly funny, utterly vibrant, very queer, full of gremlin chaos and pirate shenanigans, all good and wonderful things, right? I knew I needed it in my life half way through Alex reading chapter two to us. It comes out in June of this year and I so highly recommend you give it a look see. You can read an excerpt in the link below!
And if you too decide that you need this book in your life, go preorder it and then come join a Discord full of awesome queer pocket people that are also terribly excited for this book to be in our hands! I will also be posting fanart of ATOGAI and RCW if you also want to keep an eye on this little habitat of mine. :) Either way, best wishes and happy reading!

Literally anyone who hates book piracy should really take a moment to sit down in their room, stare at their bookshelf, and count how many books they've ever bought second-hand, or how many books they read each year from the library.
If you're against people reading books for free, you need to sit down and consider all of the ways you, personally, have read a book that didn't 'Explicitly support the author by buying a brand new individual copy from a authorized platform that pays royalties"
Like, literally.
Sit down and think about it.
What, functionally, is the difference between a book that you downloaded, and a book you bought or acquired Used?
How about a used book you got from your friend, or family?
A yardsale?
How about the Free bin outside a book shop or a library?
How about from A Little Free Library?
How about the books you borrow from the library and return so another hundred individuals can read that same book?
If a publisher gives hundreds of thousands of copies of their ebooks for free in one year, how can you then turn around and disparage those who got *their* free copies from another source a year later when that promotion ended?
If you legitimately think that book piracy robs authors, then by all rights you should also think that libraries and used bookstores should be illegal. You can't have it both ways. Either you can acknowledge that poor people who can't afford to buy brand new books exist, and that they still deserve to be able to read and have access to books, or you think that anybody who doesn't go out of their way to buy brand new copies of every single release directly from a publisher are somehow stealing from authors???
Almost every book I've ever owned has been a used copy from yard sales, flea markets, eBay, better World books, etc.
Now that I am an adult with disposable income, if I have a favored author that I discovered from those $1 used paperbacks, guess what! I will usually preorder their newest book if I can afford to do so-- but that is not a luxury everyone has, especially in 2025 and beyond!
And guess what? Even if I am going out of my way to preorder a new physical book from my favorite author for $20-$30 .... I still need a DRM free ebook to actually read it so I can increase the text size and contrast to avoid getting a massive headache from the small font sizes, or risk that prescious physical copy getting ruined if I want to be able to read anywhere away from home , or having to lug around an 800+ page hardcover with me if I want to read literally anywhere other than my home, which I still have to squint down at the page to do so.
"Just buy the Kindle edition!" -- what, so Amazon can literally change what version of the book I have at any time, or revoke the licence because 'buying' a kindle book isn't actually owning it?? So I can't read the books I 'own' on an older device that doesn't support the official Kindle app, like the 14 year old Ipad I spent almost 6 hours to get it back into a usable state by rolling back the "latest ios update" that Apple put out to slow it to a snails pace and make it a buggy peice of shit??
There's a reason my favorite publishers are the ones who sell phyiscal copies and DRM free ebooks in bundles !
https://bookriot.com/book-pirates/
Surprisingly, pirates avidly buy books,” the survey shares. 14.4% of respondents admitted to engaging in book piracy. They are younger than the average survey population and more of them are men and people of color, but the most unifying trait they have is that book pirates are avid readers — and they buy more books than the average respondent: “Compared to the general survey population, a higher percentage of book pirates during COVID are buying more ebooks (38.7%), audiobooks (27.1%) and print books (33.7%).” They’re also much more likely than general survey respondents to buy books in multiple formats: 41.5% do! During the pandemic, book pirates also increased their purchasing of newspaper and magazine subscriptions. They also are more likely to be library power users. 77.2% own a library card, and they borrow more than the average survey population, including ebooks (30.1%), audiobooks (31.6%), and print books (28.5%). Book pirates often use the library for discovering books that they go on to purchase: “58.4% of pirates bought a book at the bookstore that they first discovered at a library. 54.3% of pirates bought a book online that they first found in a library (compared to 35.9% of the general survey population).” Many turn to pirating books when they aren’t available at the library, especially Gen Z respondents. Book pirates are almost twice as likely to read or download free books for marketing promotions, and they’re also more likely to post a book review on social media (59.9%) and more than twice as likely to read fan fiction (27.4% do, as compared to 12.2% of the general survey population). This suggests that book pirates are some of the most passionate readers online, actively promoting titles and fandoms. This isn’t the first survey to suggest that piracy isn’t a simple case of lost sales. In fact, a €360,000 ($430,000) study by the European Union in 2013 found that outside of new blockbuster movie releases, there was “no robust statistical evidence of displacement of sales by online piracy,” including across books, video games, and movies. In fact, they found it might even help video game sales.
Gee, it's almost as though every single study ever done on media piracy proves over and over again that people who care enough about a piece of media to pirate it are also the ones who spend the most money on that media??
Quite literally since time in memorial this is been proven over and over and over again.
There is a reason bands release their music for free on YouTube.
There is a reason many new authors post themselves reading their works for free as audiobooks on YouTube.
There's a reason publishers will give away thousands of free ebooks in advance of a new publication in a series.
Because they know, for a fact, That people will discover their work because it is free, or otherwise they would never have purchased an unknown.
Anyways.
TL;DR: Free access to ebooks does not mean people "won't buy books" , it will just mean people who can't afford to buy books *will be able to read books*, and even publishers know this and will give away an entire series for free to get people to read the newest release.
The exact same way as borrowing a book from the library or a friend or a community little free library doesn't directly support an author monetarily for each reader, but *does* get them exponentially more people reading their book, who are much more likely to go on and buy them when they release, and buy their own copies.

Erin go bragh! (Ireland forever.)
Tumblr media
Behold, the special Irish edition of my book. I love how golden and fancy it is, like an opulent special treat just for me. (And others. While stocks last!) And it highlights the gilded wings of the queen’s bone throne. I think the gold colour also brings out the cracks in the title, which form in the story and everyone’s lives (distress the title more I coaxed my poor patient designer… now more… hey check out this Sex Pistols logo… Designer: hey shut up (not really, he would never, but he’d be justified).)
Note: it is a paperback, because my people hate hardcovers. I don’t know why, the Irish simply don’t buy them. Sarah J. Maas is super fancy bestselling and I just saw her latest House of Flame and Shadow in paperback on a fancy table in the airport, with the other fancy paperbacks. I buy hardcovers for my favourites myself! I like that they last. (The UK purple edition is what you want, currently, if you wish a hardcover.) But I’m so excited to have a fancy exclusive edition, in the format the Irish most prefer. There aren’t very many copies (exclusive!) so I’m nervously hoping it might sell out!
I’m also excited that it’s Irish. People often think I’m American - maybe because I have a weird accent (Liverpudlian plus Australian plus Scottish plus Irish leads people to go ‘American?’ and Americans to go ‘Canadian?’) or an American literary agent (I would never part with Suzie). I once saw someone ask why I make a fuss about being Irish American - the outrage! No offence Irish Americans, thank you for buying me drinks when I flash the passport in Boston, but I can’t have learned compulsory Irish from age five for nothing. They didn’t let you go to the bathroom without asking in Irish. Someone had an accident! (Not me, I work well under pressure, but not great.) Countries are made up, but I’m still proud of mine. I translated Catullus’s Latin poems into Irish, and the Irish poets in my life (Ireland teems with poets) were so pleased I was breaking away from my filthy prose lifestyle. Ireland doesn’t tax writers (or musicians, or any creators) if they make under a certain amount, which has saved me and some of my friends. As imaginary countries go, it’s a good one. So this feels like celebrating my country, and my country celebrating me, and believing in the book of my heart.
Should you wish fancy limited gold, pray preorder below! Kennys.ie might be the best bet for those outside Ireland. If I collected many colours like Pokémon, which one would you want to see next?
EDIT: The book is in English! So sorry to be confusing. As are Sarah J Maas’s Irish editions. Very few of our books are in Irish, though… perhaps one day… I’d love it, even though despite training from my youth, I’m actually a lot better at Latin.
